Scoma's Restaurant

We ate at Scoma's which is located right on San Francisco Bay. The food was OK, but considering the price, not great. However, it was a beautiful sunny day and we had a great time walking around Sausalito.

Catherine had a seafood Frittata (a type of Italian omelet) and I had sole stuffed with bay shrimp and dungeness crab.

Sausalito, California

Today my wife and I went to San Francisco and drove across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, which is just North of San Francisco, for lunch.

Downtown Sausalito

Perhaps you have heard the song "(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay". It was written by Otis Redding while he lived on a houseboat in Sausalito.

The park Viña del Mar

This park, Viña del Mar, is located in the middle of Bridgeway Street, and was recently re-opened to the public. The elephants, which at the entrance, and the fountain came from the Panama-Pacific Exposition (San Francisco) in 1915.

Princess Street

A variety of restaurants, cafes and coffee shops are also located throughout this area.

There were lots of sailboats on the bay today with colorful spinnaker sails.

Fort Point and Golden Gate Bridge

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began work on Fort Point in 1853. Plans specified that the lowest tier of artillery be as close as possible to the water level so cannonballs could ricochet across the water's surface to hit enemy ships at the waterline. Workers blasted the 90-foot cliff down to 15 feet above sea level.

Plans for the Golden Gate Bridge in the 1930's called for the fort's removal, but Chief Engineer Joseph Strauss redesigned the bridge to save the fort. "While the old fort has no military value now," Strauss said, "it remains nevertheless a fine example of the mason's art....It should be preserved and restored as a national monument."
